Short answer: Yes. Long answer: Hell yes. Really long answer: You're expected to have them for lectures, assignments, etc. Qualification of above answers: This all holds true for science/maths/a few other subjects I've seen. I'm pretty sure it's true for all courses.

I did Ext 1 Eng to escape from Advanced. I did Ext 2 Eng to escape from Ext 1...that worked out nicely. :p For maths, I was always going to do Ext 2 anyway, no questions asked...that was fun. :)
