    National Year 12

I spent a good portion of high school wishing I could do the IB instead of the HSC. :p It's a nice program, and their "1-2 page essays" are often about conveying information in a concise, coherent form...which seems much better than the random waffling I had to do for the HSC. < insert long...

Well, we could do something vaguely interesting...like organise a conglomeration of BoS ppl at some predetermined time and place. :p

    quick integration questions

It's a very common trick, yes. But it's not always safe to assume that it's what is needed for the question. I don't think there are more than a few pathological cases where it actually makes the integral more difficult, but there are certainly cases where it won't help you see anything better.

    Polynomial question....What the hell

If it's as written, this question is all about making the coefficients zero...well, most of them. :p a) Degree 3 means no terms higher than x^3 (that is, no x^4, x^5, x^6, x^7, etc.) So we want to kill the x^7 term -- the way to do that is to make the coefficient 0. So a-4=0 ==> a=4. We...

    quick integration questions

First one -- I can give you an answer (from Mathematica, which I've differentiated and checked to be correct): (-1/3)*Arctan(3*Cot(x)) -- as to how to get to the answer, I can't remember...it's been a while since I did all my 4U techniques. :p Second one -- simple substitution, try...

Legalise Weapons in Australia? So we can be like Americans?

Well, our society has agreed that these acts are wrong, and as a society, we want these acts to be illegal. As part of those laws, we usually specify a maximum penalty for it. That's to stop judges from prescribing draconian sentences (life imprisonment for stealing a gun, to use your...

who do you like beezly or howard

Sure, there are some academics like that. But I think you'll find, on the whole, that academics have an appreciation for their field and for the *limits* of their knowledge. (Except, of course, when students challenge them, which is another story...j/k :p) Again, true that some academics...

who do you like beezly or howard

Would you care to support those statements with some hard evidence? My career prospects lie largely in academia and research, and I *know* people work extremely hard in my fields. Take away the academics with their so-called "useless studies" and you have policy-making with a lot less information.

Legalise Weapons in Australia? So we can be like Americans?

What can I say? You might want to live in a society where people can drive by and shoot up your house without getting punished, but I don't. Nor does most of our society, I'd say... As a matter of interest, if I take a gun and try to murder you, but miss and hit the wall next to you, should...

are u allowed to use 4u techniques on a 2u paper?

No reason you shouldn't be able to. *points to the quote for one of the sub-forums*: "Students will develop appreciation of the scope, usefulness, beauty and elegance of mathematics." If you can find an elegant way to do it, obscure or otherwise, then to me that's as good as, if not...

Mmm, I know, but it would be nice to have a bar with decent classical. :p < begin shameless off-topic plug > Canberra Youth Orchestra will be doing a couple of concerts towards May/June, probably at Wesley Uniting Church in Forrest and a couple of other venues...I'll post info closer to the...

are u allowed to use 4u techniques on a 2u paper?

Absolutely not. :p If the problem doesn't specify a technique, then you should use the best (i.e. most efficient) technique you have in your inventory. If that happens to be outside the syllabus, then so be it...they shouldn't be able to take marks off you. :) (My $0.02, of course, I've...

    Maths Help ASAP

Depends how far you go with maths. If you do maths at uni, you'll probably never do calculations in degrees again. Most, if not all, of the equations, formulae, etc. that you derive and play with use angles in radians (simplest example I can think of atm is the formula for the arc length of a...

'Guest workers' and Australia's labour shortage

I should note that the unemployment rate refers to people who are willing but unable to find work (this, of course, being the definition used by the ABS). (Actually, I think the definition refers to people "actively seeking employment".) For example, parents staying at home, people taking a...
