Recently I've seen two Winterbottom films, his futuristic "brief-encounter" experience Code 46 as well as the musical-biography of 70s-80s music pioneer(?) Tony Wilson 24 Hour Party People, which has since rocketed among my favourite films of all time.

I can't believe I found this man's films so late. He is such a talented director, with such a fantastic range! Code 46 is a very subtle, beautifully shot exercise in atmosphere and "feeling" rather than a narrative. It's a flawed film, but it's still very good. Tim Robbins works excellently in a very sensitive, restrained performance. Then 24 Hour Party People is a frenetic, shaky-camered, music extravaganza - blending riotous comedy (some of the best lines, ever) with great drama and some brilliant music. It also seemed to evoke a sense of nostalgia for a time I never knew. The 80s music scene is something I never experienced, yet after 24 Hour Party People I feel as if I want to go back!

Fantastic stuff.

Undoubtlably a lot has to do with his collabortation with screenwriter Frank Cottrell Boyce, who also wrote Danny Boyle's Millions, which I also loved. 24 Hour Party People is so naturally written, giving such distinctive voices its characters, especially Tony Wilson, who "went to fucking Cambridge!"

His 9 Songs looked to be like shit when I first heard about it, but after being literally blown away with his other films, i really want to give it a go. I've heard conflicting reports, so I'd like to make a judgement myslelf. What did others think?

He's also got a new film coming out called A Cock and Bull Story, also starring Steve Coogan who played Tony Wilson in 24 Hour Party People. Looks like something really different again, and damn, i'm keen. :)

Any other fans of Winterbottom? Or perhaps those who hate his work entirely? :p
