Yep, in 3 days actually... this year's gone pretty quick...
This weekend I'm figuring out what to say in my supporting document, and more importantly, what colour tie to wear

4th of July, at newcastle Uni.
All I have left to fill in on the supporting statement is the last section of the personal info section, but I'm working all day tomorrow... oh well, I'm sure it will get done!

Secondary, English/Legal Studies specialisations.
The GRP admin people keep losing part of my application, and I wasn't getting anywhere, so I just rang them: "where did you find this number?" "the white pages" "oh, that's new, grads aren't meant to ring, but use email" - she was quite helpful though.

I think I handled it reasonably well. Make sure you've thought about the Institute of Teachers' criteria.

The 7 Elements of the Professional Teaching Standards.
The broad areas cover how well you know your subject content, students and learning styles, how to plan and reflect, communicate effectively, how to create quality learning environments, how to incorporate the principals of life long learning, and how you aare part of the profession and community.
The questions they asked me were pretty easy. And everyone's said how nice the interviewers have been, they want us to do well remember. Make sure you have some practical examples from your pracs that you remember, they could ask about a specific unit you've done, or how you've managed students exhibiting disruptive behavioural patterns etc. They started pretty generally with me, stuff like "so why did you choose teaching?" and then moved into other things like I mentioned above, you don't have to know the Professional Standards, well, you do, they're now mandatory and we have to pay $80 p/a because of them, but for this, so long as you know what you've done on prac and have a basic idea of what you should have learnt in your degree, you'll be fine, stuff like child protection and stuff like that, you know mandatory reporting etc.
I was only in 20 mins, they do make it easy, and there's nothing to be concerned about, promise.

Hey does anyone have the phone number for the graduate package? As I'm now not going to finish until next year and I was wondering if I can use the same application for next year or if I have to do another application and go for the interview again.

They tend to not use the phones for the GRP, they prefer us to use emails I think. I'm pretty sure you'll have to re-apply all over again.

So how did everyones interviews end up going?
I'm still unsure what to do (mine will be next year) I am quite open to moving to a rural area but I don't want to move at the end of NEXT year, I was hoping to have a year off for travelling before I did that.

My interview was fine, and I just received my Interim number, so I can take up some cas teaching this term, which is a good thing if for no other reason than making my bank balance slightly healthier.Ranger Stacie said:
In terms of taking a year to travel, there's nothing easier. You can put your application status on hold, which means you keep your approval date at what it would be when you graduate, you just won't be offered a job until you put it back on active status. I'm deciding on whether or not to teach in the UK next year, so I would do the same thing as you. Put my application on hold, go over for a year, come back, activate my application, and my approval date would still be January 1, 2007.
There are plenty of ways around things like that, if you'd like more info, let me know.

Can I ask.. do you apply for your teaching in your 3rd year of your degree and you can start doing a bit of casual teaching in fourth year?

Not as such. You apply formally in your final year and can start teaching, dependent on uni course requirements, in term 4 of your final year.
You can go be a Teacher's Aid etc though, which can give you great experiences and decent money.

So when going to an interview, do the interviewers check your grades for each unit OR do they do they only care about whether you passed or not. Is it really important what grades you end up getting, eg a Distinction average over a Pass average and do they really take much note of how you actually went in your academic studies?

1/3 of the interview grading is based on your academic performance
1/3 is based on the content of your prac reports (which sucks because the interview happens before internship!)

Does this apply for ever interview after the DET one. Say you work as a casual for a year, then you get an interview with a school, what would they look at? Will they just ask for your grades (ie whether you got HDs or passes).PrincessSJ said:
