It it true that you can use the University's Internet connection from home? Some people were trying to tell me that you can access the Internet through a University phone line. Is this true

yeah, youve gotta get some kit thingy from a cybercycle and you get 2hours at a time... apparently its really slow... but for the cost of a local phone call (i think) it may be worth it

Oh, so it is true? I don't think it would be any slower than my Dial-Up Modem though. Also, is it strictly for educational use only?

Yeah I installed it a few months ago... really sluggish (only got sumtin like 40,000 bps) + the 2 hour session limit + refused to load certain webpages, so I've given up on it. There's no stipulations/monitoring of what you use it for so if you can get it to work then good luck to ya!Merethrond said:Oh, so it is true? It sounds like you have the same connection problem I do, it's called Telstra.
They refuse to upgrade our exchange, so no matter how new the actual lines are, we can't get speeds faster than 32k (but the last few weeks have turned up nothing over 28, more often 26). Good luck getting broadband though.

In theory yes. However, all the slightly-less-rich-than-North-Sydney (known as "less critical") exchanges experience a severe case of mighty suckage.
In short, we have to wait for Telstra to decide that oh look, we can make more money by putting in more DSL capable lines in our God-forsaken ancient exchanges. If the Government sells Telstra at least they will be subject to NORMAL corporate standards - if that were the case now they'd be shredded in court thrice a week.

Well, I'm feeling pretty chuffed with my constant 52k and 5.5-6k/sec downloads..
I'm on a RIM, out at Warners Bay, so can't get ADSL, much to my chagrin..
But I do think I've got one of the fastest dialup connections around.. *shrug*
SJ - I didn't think the lines up your way were THAT bad? I know a couple of people that live up the road from you, and they get 44-48k.. you REALLY need your lines fixed up..
By law, Telstra HAS to guarantee 19kbps as a minimum now, so it'd be worth giving them a call and demanding them to fix it, or at least maintain reasonable (*cough* for some reason 19kbps is reasonable..?) access speeds..

its my street.. we get water in the lines everytime it rains... theyve been out so often but cant find the problem because they come in perfect sunshine gggrrrr.. i will investigate the 19kbps tho!! thanks

I suggest you take some screenshots of your connnection screen over a period of a couple of weeks, showing that your connection speed is consistently low when it rains, then refer it to the TIO. Telstra MUST guarantee it, in ALL weather conditions, so yeah, get on their arse! Go above their heads to the TIO, hound them until they fix it.
