I'm not sure I understand you, at least I'm sure you have misunderstood me. You had implied that religious people would be against it because the bible says no, I said that atheists could also be against it for the above reason. Has that cleared it up?

uh, well if we make this decision in the absence of a religious perspective, then it kind of follows that it's an atheist one. Can you please explain why you're against it? edit: and it makes the world of difference which religious (or lack thereof) background you are coming from.

You can argue against it from an atheist perspective: If we only have this one life, then surely any life, albeit one of pain, is better than nothing now and ever. Also add to that the possibility of recovery or other significant events occurring before your time.

I think most people that argue that people have the right over their own bodies do so under the assumption that it is when they are fully rational and capable. It would appear that someone wanting to commit suicide because of a break up or something is not rational or capable of that kind of...

But on the other hand, if you're willing to commit suicide then you're probably not in the state of mind to concern yourselves with your friends/family's wellbeing. (this refers to young suicide rather than end of life, deathbed scenarios)

Actually yeah, can we split this into two catagories? Those who are for/against it on theoretical and philosophical grounds, and those who are for/against it for practical/empathetic reasons. I realise that if you are for it in the latter then you'd kind of have to be for it on theoretical...

so you think that it's okay to turn off something that's assisting them to live; if they don't survive without it, it's not exactly 'killing' a person. But you're against anything active, such as using drugs to kill a person who's in pain?

The point from atheism I'm wondering about is like this: A rational agent has a right to chose what he/she thinks is best for themselves. Paternalism is wrong (in this situation) Having a terminal illness and living in pain is a worse option for the person suffering it. Dying is the better...

As an atheist I don't know if I can support it ideally, and pragmatically I don't think it would ever work. Decriminalising it, on the other hand, might be an option edit: can someone please explain to me, the difference between legalising and decriminalising?
