Hi, I got a letter from Centrelink this week saying:
Our records currently state that your course will end on 20 December 2003. Please notify Centrelink if this date is incorrect. To continue your Youth Allowance as a fullt-time student, you must advise Centrelink that you intend to study...
(i) you get y=(x^2)/12 from the second equation and sub it into the first one:
thus, x^2 - 12mx - 36m^2 = 0
if the line touches the parabola (ie it is a tangent to it), then the discriminant = 0
discriminant = b^2 - 4ac
=144m^2 - 4(1)(-36m^2)...
first sketch the graph
then you can see that:
from 0 -> 1 it travels 4m
from 1 -> 2 it travels 2m
from 2 -> 2.5 it travels 0.25m
from 2.5 -> 3 it travels 0.25 m
from 3 ->4 it travels 2m
add em up and it comes to 8.5m
im sure theres a prettier way of doing it. but this still works :)
