Say for example, a student who ranked first overall internally really messed up the external exam, but the person below performed significantly better than the person who ranked first:

Exam marks:
1 - 78
2 - 95
3 - 72
4 - 70
+... n

How would this affect rank 2's performance? Would they then be disadvantaged?

Also, suppose that in another cohort, the following exam marks occured
1 - 82
2 - 80
3 - 72
4 - 97
5 - 68

As this is an outlier, how would rank 4 do overall?
I am aware that they do some matching, but do outliers get moderated indepent of the rest of their cohort?

If I understood the first question correctly, we are supposing that Student A ranked first internally but performed unfavourably in their HSC exam, and Student B ranked second internally and performed very well in the HSC exam (assuming the highest HSC exam mark in the cohort). In such a case, Student A's Assessment Mark would be made equal to Student B's Examination Mark and Student A would receive their own Examination Mark. On the other hand, Student B's Assessment Mark would be made similar to the second-highest Examination Mark, and Student B would receive their own Examination Mark.

The same logic applies to your second question. The student ranked fourth internally would receive an Assessment Mark similar to the fourth-highest Examination Mark achieved by any student in that cohort, and they would also keep their own Examination Mark (same as above). In terms of outliers, the answer depends on whether NESA determines that a particular student must be excluded from the process of determining the 3 anchor points for the subject's cohort. NESA typically exclude students:
  • With an upheld illness/misadventure application and an Examination Mark lower than expected given their performance in the school assessment
  • With a much lower exam mark than expected given their performance in the school assessment
  • That they determine are special cases.
Even when excluded, the moderation process is still performed in the same way and excluded students are still subject to it, the difference being the anchor points which would have been different had the excluded student(s) not been excluded.

I hope this helps! 😄
