point in 4u maths over 3u maths? (1 Viewer)

What is the point of doing 4unit maths?? It is like 10x more work than 3u?

it is not true that doing 4u maths ensure 100% for 2U. The way it works is that your 4U mark contributes to 50% of your overall maths mark whilst your 3U mark contributes the other 50%.

If you are getting less than 60% in 4U you would be better off dropping it and allowing your 2U exam marks to count.

4U maths makes uni maths a helluva lot easier, if you decide to do something mathematically intensive such as engineering, comp sci, actuarial studies etc. It also scales very well if you do reasonably good in it. Basically, if you're really good at maths and enjoy it, and especially if you want to do something strongly associated with maths at uni then do 4U. Otherwise, you might as well stick to 3U or whatever other level of maths you do. Speaking from experience

Say that maths has these scaling means in arbitrary units:

2u maths: 10
3u maths: 20
4u maths: 30

Ok. Now say if i did 3u maths, i'd get a total of 40 (2x10 + 20) but a mean of 13.3 for each unit.

Now if i did 4u, i'd get a total of 100 (2x20 +2x30) and a mean of 25 per subject.

comparing 3u's 13.3 and 4u's 25, wouldnt it be much better if a person putting in the same effort for 3u into 4u (no more no less) just did 4u for the sake of scaling or am i totally missing the point?

thats why im wondering if they are assumed 100%.

because if it is 4 unit then 2 unit has to come from somewhere and if the 4u people don't have to sit the exam i thought it counts as 100% for them

Yes and no.

In theory, the assumption is there; however, in practice, it is not.

It has been argued that the Mathematics course is too easy and that, were the Extension 2 students to take it, they would all receive full marks. This was the original reason for removing it from the Extension 2 curriculum - and it has only remained this way for historical reasons (even George Cooney argues against it).

The marks for an Extension 2 student are based entirely on their performance in the Extension 1 and 2 courses.

To truly achieve a mark of 100% in the Mathematics course, you would need to score 100 in the exam and be ranked first for your assessments (to ensure a mark of 100 as your moderated assessment mark). It's more difficult than it sounds.
