This is coordinate geometry.
1. A hillside is a plane of gradient $\gamma$ facing due south. A map shows a straight road on the hillside going in the direction $\alpha$ east of north. Find the gradient of the road in terms of $\gamma$ and $\alpha$ .

2. Find the smallest possible value: $\sqrt{x^2+y^2}+\sqrt{(x-1)^2+y^2}+\sqrt{x^2+(y-1)^2}+\sqrt{(x-3)^2+(y-4)^2}$
