identify data, gather and process information from first-hand or secondary sources to trace historical developments in the design and construction of ocean-going vessels with a focus on the metals used

I have seen two contradicting things in pathways and macquarie regarding the nails used to nail copper to the hull of the ship.

Pathways says: it was originally iron nails, but was then changed to copper nails to avoid corrosion.

Macq says: iron nails were always used, but they were later caulked to prevent contact with the sheeting.

I hope that made sense, and if someone could clear this up it would be much appreciated.:)

It was probably both. Both solutions prevent the problem of corrosion of the iron nails.
