just a little question..where do they offer the course "medical science/plastic surgery??"
as for ur question about chemistry...nah, its not hard if u concentrate in class and follow the syllabus by making ur own notes.
for medical science - chemistry and another science (preferrably biology) as well as maths will help to prepare you....but i dont think its compulsary.

Nothing is compulsory to get into a uni course these days. I think chem is recommended though, so it'll help you if you did it. As for the difficulty, no I don't think it's that hard (well, speaking for the prelim course anyway

I disagree, preliminary was so boring but HSC was slightly better. I think medicine has assumed knowledge of Chemistry and Physics or Biology but it's not necessary. Biology is a fun subject more fun then chemistry in my opinionmitsui said:

well, sorry to burst the little happy bubble here, but I find chemistry very hard!!! Its a subject that requires a lot of extra work for me (although thats just me, I'm sure everyone is different). Subjects like Biology and PDHPE are good because a lot of the stuff I'm learning, I have already come accross in day to day life anyway, whereas the stuff you learn in chemistry - ya dont stumble accross that kinda knowledge in ya everyday life!!
I never did HSC biology, however, I did do the so-called "fundamental biology" course last year in uni. Overall, the course was absolutely shocking with all the plants and evolution stuff. Nonetheless, I did enjoy some aspects of it, which led me to study molecular biology and biochemistry.pLuvia said:

You can't automatically get into a specialised branch of Medicine. Everyone has to do a course from about 4-7 years.
There are many Universities which allow you to study Medicine in 5-6 years, with your UMAT's.
As for Subjects? I'd say minimum 2 unit Mathematics(Advanced), Chemistry and Physics. Chemistry is always a prevalent *preferred* pre-requisite, however I also included Physics and 2 U (Advanced) Mathematics, as it will help your brain to start grasping slightly different concepts, and will help your problem solving skills for future use - provided you take the course work seriously.
Subjects like - and I mean no offence to anyone else here - like History and Hospitality do require some form of intellectual ability, but they do not entail high levels of problem solving.
I didn't mention English, because it's compulsory, but try to go with 2U (Advanced) minimum, as it will help your UAI a lot.
You should be aiming for a UAI of 96 and above - preferrably 99 and above to keep all your options open. To get into Medicine in most Universities, you must undertake and score a good mark in a test called the UMAT. Click here for more information. Most Universities also require an Interview where you demonstrate you interpersonal and communication skills. There are preparation courses which you can purchase - expensive, but essential - to ensure a good UMAT score.

Yay. I want to do Medicine and then specialise in Plastic Surgery as well. I'm doing all the Sciences though, 'cause I loooove Science.
Chemistry is a piece of piss. Physics I found even easier. Chem in prelim is ridiculously boring, but easy. Physics in Prelim is a lot of maths, not a high level of amths, if you have strong algebra and can solve moderate equations than you will nail physics.
Chem is more content based, problem solving (at least in prelim) is basically only balancing chemical equations. It's the sort of subject where by you can read the excel book two days before your yearly and still do damned well.
This is jus my experience of Chem/Physics, some people find either one or both really hard, we had a fair people few drop from them at our school.
As to what you should choose for Yr 11. It entirely depends on you.
In prelim I did
Ext Eng
Ext Math
Modern
Ancient
Chem
Physics (Dropped Chem for physics 5 weeks before the end of prelim)
Legal
SoR II
So I'm probably in a good position to advise on differrent subjects for prelim.
You have to do English and do at least Adv because of scaling
I found Legal really interesting and love it
I'd do Modern over Ancient if you want to do a history
Do both chem and Physics, at least to start with
If you want to do Medicine do at least 2u maths, i'd suggest 3 U even if you know you're going to drop it later, it'll help with physics and 2U
Then whatever you want, I'd never do Art, Drama or Music, but if you like them do it. Just keep in mind that some subjects have a capped contribution so even if you get, for example, 100 HSC score in drama it'll only contribute about 95 TES.
Ext Eng is a piece of shit, kind of interesting, will sort of help with Adv but I wouldn't do it for HSC. it takes English to the point where it just becomes meaningless
SoR is an easy content based subject, if you can write an essay you'll kill it. I wouldn't bother though unless you're school makes you.

And as if in today's society there is a scale that can unbiasly scale 'hardness'. You'll just have to try it out, try your best and make your own decision.
I finished HSC Chemistry in Year 11 so for you my friend, anything is possible.

If you want to do med chem comes highly recommended if not assumed knowledge. It scales pretty well to, so a plus on the UAI factor if you do well. Also wanting to do med probably means you're a really determined person cos medicine means a lot, I mean a lot of study. So good luck, try chem and if you work hard you should understand all the concepts and get ace marks!

(Altough you can't trust my word at this point because I've only covered half of year 12 HSC chemistry ).

And for you my friend, is a very long way away. So I wouldn't stress nor worry about it in the meantime. I would keep an open mind for your future, as you need to be flexible in making decision.
