im really worried because i dont think with the subjects im doing i will be able to get a UAI of over 85.

They are:
Standard english, Business Studies, General Maths, Business Services, Information Processes and Technology and Studies of Religon 1 unit. Is there any chance with the harsh scaling im sure to recieve?

Do not worry about the scaling, just concentrate on getting good ranks relative to your other classmates. It is definitely possible to get a UAI of over 85 with that combination of subjects, so don't give up. :)

It sure is. When we had the careers lecture, one of the examples of the UAI that they gave us was of a person with very similar subjects, but with visual arts rather than IPT, and 2U Religion. They got an average of around about the 80 mark, and ended up with a UAI of 86.8.

Now that's gotta be some comfort, I know it did for me. That was somebody's mark from the class of 2003/2004 (can't remember which exactly).

With that subject range it's possible to get high 90s even (as with any subject choice really), it's more about how much you work and getting those marks.

It is very possible to get a UAI of 85+ with those subjects; you just need a bit of consistency;
eg: around 82 for each subject as a final HSC mark.

(They calculate the HSC mark; by using the results in the actual hsc as 50%;
The calculate the other 50% by getting your rank in your school and comparing how your school did on the hsc; and the standard deviation of the difference in internal assessment).

So if your school sets hard assessments your internal mark will go up;
if your school sets easy assessments your internal mark will go down; they then add the 2 marks to give you a score out of 100.
Then those scores are scaled slightly to give you an aggregate score.
The best Aggregate scores (10 units) are added up; giving you a number out of 500.
That number is then compared with the rest of the state. Person with the highest score gets 100 UAI; then 99.99 then 99.98 (people with equal scores share the same UAI).

The person who comes last; for thir aggregate score of 500; doesn't get 0 UAI however; because everyone who completed the school certificate counts in the calculationof the UAI; so if 20% left this year; the lowest UAI is 20.00

So the get a UAI of 85 it doesn't mean you were in the top 85% of all the people doing the hsc; but more of all the people who did the school certificate.

You can get around 91 with the subjects your doing as long as you get mid to high 80's for your hsc mark. And i know people who did similar subjects to yours and have gotten 95+.

Not necessarily....
If you're particularly good at maths but have poor literacy skills.
And choose General Maths and Advanced English;

As opposed to someone who has poor math skills and has sound literacy skills;
Choosing 2u Maths and Standard english...

What would the difference be?

The First person would do slightly better. Because, he would likely top the General maths course with little effort and have more time to focus on english...(Considering he puts in the actual effort).

The point is... if you choose subjects you can do really good in; you will get a better UAI... (Since aggregates; which calculate your UAI is based on your rank).

UAIs come in 0.05 increments.
