BEcon won't limit your options really. Pretty much anything you can get into with commerce you can get into with economics. I'm finishing off my BEco and have been able to get internships in management consulting and Big4 Tax & Legal. Haven't tried finance, but I don't think it'd stop them from...
I'd go to Melbourne then if you wouldn't move out in Sydney. Really, for most people, college is an amazing experience. This mainly comes from a UK perspective where most people move out to stay in colleges. I'd imagine it'd apply here though.
I disagree. Personally, from my year abroad in the UK where I stayed at a college I'd say it's such an awesome experience on so many levels (sense of community, academic support, things to get involved in, living close to campus etc etc etc) that I'd recommend that anyone stay at a college.
I'm...
Re: Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Economics or Bachelor of Commerce (Liberal Studi
My thoughts on the Comm/Eco double as copied from my post on another thread on BoS:
Current econs/commerce double student here.
Best bit of advice you'll ever hear is: do NOT do the combined...
As has been mentioned - mathematics and/or economics. Are you more interested in it theoretically or in application?
Don't know of anywhere where you can major in game theory and this is probably a good thing as it's really quite specific. There are likely to be very very few graduate level...
Fair enough. I admit that the firm I worked at wasn't in the league of McKinsey etc. I'm not sure those firms even offer undergraduate internships in Australia, and if they do, there are very limited places. However, it's decent and its management are all made up of ex-Bain guys.
Cheers for the...
A reasonable doubt. It was for the same company if that clears it up at all. (ie I did 3 months before going on exchange to the UK and then 3 months 3 days a week during this most recent semester.
Didn't really like your tone in this post. I didn't at all deprive someone of a spot in med. I didn't start it and the position would have been given to someone during the 2nd round offers. I also did not list my dad being a doctor as a reason why I didn't do it, but simply as the reason why I...
Hey everyone,
I could do with advice and opinions on my situation. I'm considering doing post-grad law and think that this might just be a little nuts.
My background:
I graduate with a Bachelor of Economics from UWA mid-2010. I'd most likely be applying for the start of 2011 and would...
1) See my thoughts about the combined Eco/Commerce degree here: Commerce/eco combined degree
2) Not sure about the ANU nightlife, but I'd assume it's not as good as Sydney or Melbourne
3) ANU is the most internationally renowned university in Australia. This is primarily because it outputs the...
That's pretty insulting actually.
I go to UWA (A Go8 uni) and here an 80 is an HD. More than likely it's just as hard to get 80 here as it is to get 85 in a uni where that's an HD.
Now, take the UK: There, a 1st (there equivalent of an HD) is 70% and a 2.1 (distinction) is 60%. A pass is 40%...
Talk to your course coordinator.
On another, but related, note, i'm a huge fan of the Melbourne Model (thinking about possibly doing a JD there).
>80 different undergrad degrees (and some ridiculous ones like comm/eco) is ridiculous and is plainly just money-seeking without thought of what...
OK, I'm not sure how the actuarial exemptions work exactly (maybe you could fill me in?)
But from what I can see, you can complete a major in actuarial studies in the 3yr BComm degree with the option of going to 4th year honours. Comparing 4yrs with honours and 4years in the double I can't...

Best bit of advice you'll ever hear is: do NOT do the combined commerce/economics degree.
It is completely pointless.
Compare these options:
1) Do the double degree and take 4 years over it. Come out with 3/4 majors.
2) Do a single (economics or...
I actually worked for this company for 1 week back when I had just finished high school and before starting uni. I quit after that time as it really didn't suit me.
The job was basically driving to some suburb each day and knocking on as many doors as you can to give a sales spiel - in my case...
