The lectures arn't compulsory to attend but if they are they will imform u before hand. They don't mark your name for it either; however I advice you to attend a few lectures to see how much ur gaining out of it!
The practicals depend on subject, for eg: for intro to electrical...
COngrats !!! First year ull pretty much be doin common subjects as the rest of the major students..
For maths modelling 1 and physical modelling if u need the soft copy of the text book lemme know :)
