Seconded. Personally I think 3 years deserves a good night out together, I vote for classy dinner, ring and a show/concert. Motor show tickets is a bit suss (unless you are both petrol heads) and clothes is a more regular gift you can give any other time. Anyway, best wishes to the both of you.

I think this happens a lot more at uni? Just that random girl who makes you freeze every time you see her around campus, but you have no idea who she is or what she does.

As far as I've experienced, the friend route doesn't work. Once you're down the path, no matter how bleedingly obvious you hint that you like her, she won't notice. Stay rooted to the friends ladder unless she makes it obvious she likes you as well. Or you can just tell her you like her, then...

I think any way is fine for the first time, it doesn't matter if you're asking her out for a drink (the first time or something). But if you're asking to go out with her (as in 'be my gf') then it should definitely be done in person.
