I am confused about bonus points, I applied to used under EAS but got an email saying sorry but you didn't make it blah blah but then I got accepted into a course 3 points above my ATAR, can anyone explain this?

Does anyone know how this works? I applied for bonus points at USyd for elite athlete received an email in December saying I missed out and not to feel bad cos it is very competitive etc. Then got an main round offer from USyd that could have only received if they gave me 2 points?
