Re: Cultural Cringe?
The commercial is stupid. 'Bloody' may be a widely accepted piece of colloquial Australian language, but as far as I know, it has no positive connotations.
The words 'bloody hell' are almost exclusively used to express anger or frustration. It is not a jovial expression...
I think it should be treated more seriously.
I have a brother who is heavily addicted to computer games. When he loses he goes through fits of rage that can last hours. He screams uncontrollably, throws objects, often breaks his gaming equipment, and lashes out violently. I honestly think he...
I loved everything about this film. I think that a lot of the people who found it 'slow' didn't really appreciate the subtlety of the way the relationship developed. I'd go on about why it was so wonderful, but I think everyone who gets it gets it.
And I haven't cried in a movie since they...
Jesus Christ I don't even know what this thread is about anymore.
But anyway, I should have watched Jarhead after I watched Brokeback Mountain. Maybe then I'd have appreciated the scenes where Jake danced around nakedly.
I think this movie would have been much more effective had it focused on...

The lines were crazy. We spent half...
I'll agree with that, of course. There's a difference between a quiet pace and a tedious one. I didn't feel Golden's characterizations were strong enough to support the former.
Re: Renae Lawrence - Life in Prison. First of Bali 9 to be Sentenced
Life is a ridiculous sentence altogether. So now she's going to uselessly occupy space while she slowly rots to death. I'd prefer death by firing squad, myself.
I disliked it. Mostly because of the overwhelming sense of claustrophobia and tedious pace. Chapters seemed to pass by without anything actually happening. The whole 'Chairman' fantasy was frankly ridiculous, making it painfully obvious that despite Golden's historical/cultural knowledge, he has...
I've read The Shipping News. It was very good and, interestingly, the film adaptation was so painfully faithful to the original text that I almost couldn't watch it.
I hope Brokeback Mountain's success gains Proulx further exposure.
